Compagen was initially created by Georg Hemmrich in the laboratory of Prof. T.C.G. Bosch at the Zoological Institute of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität (Kiel, Germany). From 2010 the project was further developed and maintained by Santiago Insua and Konstantin Khalturin. Since 2014 this mirror-server termed Compagen-Japan was deployed in Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.
